Cook up a Story
Research shows that children can lose more than a month of learning over the summer. Those already struggling academically, or from low-income or socially vulnerable households, often experience the greatest loss. Yet these same children face barriers to accessing quality cultural, educational, and recreational programs, as many summer camps are cost-prohibitive. While some low-cost options exist, few provide the full range of supports families need, including transportation, nutrition, and diverse learning opportunities.
To help close this gap, EPL partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton and Area (BGCBigs) to create Cook Up a Story, a summer camp offered at no cost to participants. Launched in 2025, it is EPL’s first camp to blend storytelling, technology, and culinary arts. Designed for children ages 9–11 from vulnerable communities, the program offers hands-on experiences in the Makerspace, the Kitchen, and the Muttart Theatre, sparking imagination while building confidence.
Your Impact in 2025
In summer 2025, EPL delivered seven camps, reaching 175 children. With small group sizes of up to 25 participants per week, staff were able to build meaningful connections and provide individualized support across a range of skill levels. Campers reported discovering new aspects of the library and gaining hands-on experience in both cooking and digital literacy, from baking muffins to exploring the Makerspace. Nearly all eligible participants expressed interest in returning the following year.
With continued support, EPL aims to expand the program’s reach and deepen its curriculum, ensuring more children benefit from engaging, barrier-free summer learning experiences.
